Tournaments and TripsNorthern History | History
Throughout the club's early history, Tech Old Boys frequently participated in tournaments and friendly matches outside Wellington, as well as hosting teams from other regions.
As both Tech Old Boys and Northern United, the club regularly competed in the Wanganui five-a-side tournament, established in 1946, and the W. H. A. 'King's Birthday' (later Queen's Birthday) five-a-side tournament. A Tech Old Boys side led by A. C. Carr won the Buckland cup at the 1949 King's Birthday tournament in Fielding.
The club was again successful at the King's Birthday tournament in 1951 when the Tech Old Boys third grade team won the junior competition. Rex Manning, now a life member of the club, led Tech Old Boys to a tournament win in the Waipukurau seven-a-side tournament in 1957, and to a meritorious second place at the well-attended Wanganui five-a-side tournament in 1960.
Northern came second in the Wanganui tournament again in 1972, losing out only in extra time.
