Grant 'Doggie' Down
Super P1 Midfielder and NZ Contender

Grant, alias Dog, Doggie or G Dog, has played hockey for Northern United since the age 5, mainly in the midfield. He had a short spell in the Netherlands playing for Breda, where one of his ultimate hockey moments was winning the Dutch Overgangs Klasse with the Breda team. Grant has been a regular Wellington rep player (age group teams since Hatch cup, Wellington National Hockey League team since 2000-current) and NZ contender (NZ academy team 2003 & 2005 and Black Sticks squad 2005-2009). Grant is currently training with NZ Squad for a mid-week match vs. India in February 2009 - we wish him luck!

At Northern, Grant enjoys being part of a great club who has fostered many great hockey players over the years, several who have gone on to represent NZ at the highest level & are rated world class. Grant says there is "a choice vibe at the club & the men's p1 team has always been a title contender," so true as the team won three consecutive P1 titles from 2000-2001.

Other great hockey moments for Grant have been:

  • winning the NHL 3 times with Wellington (2002, 2003 and 2006)
  • winning the U21 tournament in Auckland as an 18 year old and
  • being sponsored by Kookaburra

Off the pitch Grant is a professional photographer, enjoys live music, sport and soaking up the summertime with the odd spot of drinking and tom-foolery ... just like the rest of us!
